Box Office Guru Wrapup: The American Takes the Top Spot

This weekend, the summer movie season closed quietly as the top ten slumped to its worst performance of 2010 with audiences finding other ways to spend their Labor Day holiday weekend. Two of the three new releases – George Clooney’s assassin pic The American and Robert Rodriguez’s violent revenge actioner Machete – met with moderate bows while Drew Barrymore’s romantic comedy Going the Distance failed to attract business. The top ten films tumbled to less than $75M (over the Friday-to-Sunday period) making for the lowest performance in nearly one year giving the marketplace very little momentum going into the fall season.

The dearth of truly quality movie DVDs continues, as most of the brand new releases this week of films that came out this year are quite solidly Rotten. Having said that, we’ve also attempted to fish out a few good re-releases, as well as one indie film that was Certified Fresh but didn’t see much action at the box office. There were also a handful of Blu-Ray titles which were simply reissues of previous releases (Forbidden Planet and Stardust, for example), so we decided to leave those off the list. So have a look and see if anything tickles your fancy.

As Hollywood types take off this last week of the summer season and possibly prepare for festival trips to Venice, Telluride and Toronto, movie news was particularly slow and sparse. The stories that did emerge include casting rumors for Guillermo del Toro’s next movie and the Fantastic Four reboot, a new World War II epic to be filmed in 3D (of course!), and new roles for Bradley Cooper, Paul Giamatti, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Dwayne Johnson, Chris Pine and Ryan Reynolds. There’s also quite a bit of sequel news for titles like Clash of the Titans 2, Skyline 2 (already!), Unbreakable 2 (though not what you might think) and X-Men Origins: Wolverine 2.

Critics Consensus: Machete Is Trashy Fun

This week at the movies, we’ve got one tough Mexican (Machete, starring Danny Trejo and Jessica Alba), long-distance lovers (Going the Distance, starring Drew Barrymore and Justin Long), and a lonely assassin (The American, starring George Clooney and Thekla Reuten). What do the critics have to say? Machete started as a trailer for a fake movie, then became a real movie. It’s a curious route to the multiplex, but critics say this old-school exploitation flick largely delivers — if you’re in the mood some sleazy fun with zero pretense. Also, critics say Going the Distance is light on substance and relies too heavily on the natural charm of its leads.

Liam Neeson Joins Carnahan’s The Grey

Bradley Cooper has left Joe Carnahan’s “The Grey,” making room for Cooper’s “A-Team” compadre, Liam Neeson, to take over his role in the drama about Alaskan pipeline workers being attacked by wolves.
