When Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum take to the screen with 21 Jump Street this weekend, it will mark the first time a television series that once starred Richard Grieco has ever been turned into a movie. But that doesn’t mean this adaptation is wholly without precedent — from cops to spies to bootleggers and everything in between, action series like Jump Street have been crossing over to the big screen for decades, and this week, we’re holstering our weapons, revving our tricked-out custom wheels, and striking a series of “spontaneous” poses during the opening credits before we count down some noteworthy examples of TV action heroes who got their own movies. It’s time for Total Recall!

This week is looking good! Whether you’re looking for dumb fun, Academy darlings, arthouse favorites, or something for the kids, we’re sure you’ll like the selection hitting stores tomorrow. We’ll just start off by listing the five (that’s right, five) Certified Fresh new releases: The Descendants, The Adventures of Tintin, Melancholia, My Week with Marilyn, and Young Adult. Not bad, eh? Then we’ve got two not-so-well-reviewed films, but they’re both geared towards the younger demographic, so that may not matter. Casa de mi Padre. Making his Spanish-language debut, Ferrell plays slow-witted black-sheep-of-the-clan Armando Alvarez, whose swarthy brother Raul (Diego Luna) is taking the family into the drug trade against the nefarious La Onza (Gael García Bernal). Meanwhile, Raul’s fiance, the beautiful and tragic Sonia (Genesis Rodriguez), has fallen for Armando, a wedding turns into a hyperreal bloodbath, and a mystical white panther stalks the patently fake jungle sets dispensing oracle wisdom. The movie is an affectionate satire of the unintentionally comic Mexican telenovelas, with a heavy dose of bad Spaghetti Westerns, overly sincere performances, and even a touch of Jodorowsky strangeness.
