The Cabin in the Woods

Saturday, March 10th, 2012

The Cabin in the Woods is a genre exercise at heart, and though it has the potential for real greatness– at certain points you might think Goddard could take this story anywhere– it settles for ultimate audience satisfaction, which is pretty close to greatness anyway. It’s so, so much fun to watch with an audience

Friends With Kids

Friday, March 9th, 2012

Westfeldt?s directorial debut may not live up being the ensemble film that the long list of names in the cast suggests, but it?s still an impressive first effort. It?s impossible not to love or, at the least, feel for every character because they?re so relatable.

Movie Review: John Carter Is Way Better Than It Looks

Friday, March 9th, 2012

Taylor Kitsch, John CarterReview in a Hurry: Part western, part swashbuckler, and a huge part science fiction, Edgar Rice Burroughs’ century-old story of a Confederate veteran turned warlord of Mars finally makes it to…

Salmon Fishing in the Yemen

Friday, March 9th, 2012

With attractive actors in flattering resort wear, serenely beautiful outdoor locations and romance that never gets much hotter than a literal roll in the sheets, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen sometimes resembles a medication commercial more than the fancy-free romance it’s going for. It goes down easy and is mostly very likable, but for both it’s actors and it’s audience it’s about as challenging as a lively round of shuffleboard

Silent House

Friday, March 9th, 2012

Given its format the film is exceptionally well planned and there is enough tension that backs of theater seats will end up with permanent dents, but the end is so incredibly disappointing that it?s hard to look past. I would almost go as far as to recommend walking out just as the movie is about to wrap up if not only because the perfect ending you can imagine in your mind is guaranteed to be better than the one that Chris Kentis and Laura Lau present.

The Hunter

Wednesday, March 7th, 2012

It?s not hard to appreciate a movie like this due to its impressive cinematography and direction as well as a great turn by Willem Dafoe, but its flaws are hard to ignore. A tighter script and a more frugal editing process could have done the film a lot of good, but the end result is still notable and an entertaining piece of cinema.

21 Jump Street

Monday, March 5th, 2012

If you saw the delightfully weird Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, it’s less surprising that 21 Jump Street is as light on its feet and funny as it is. But from Tatum’s perfect comedic chops to the gonzo drug-use sequence to the well-timed action beats of the finale, 21 Jump Street never runs out of surprises

Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax

Friday, March 2nd, 2012

The Lorax, the new adaptation of Dr. Seuss? classic story, completely misses the point. The book espoused importance of conservation, the evils of excess, and the need to preserve our natural resources and some of those elements are still there. Unfortunately, it ends up being so lost in romantic subplots that distort the main character?s motivation, oddly-placed musical numbers that feel more like filler than entertainment…

John Carter

Friday, March 2nd, 2012

The bulk of Carter is a tough slog, despite some decent performances and the admirable introduction of a tough-as-nails action heroine in Collins. Arid, barren Barsoom is a dull environment for a sci-fi blockbuster, and the consequences of the conflicts happening on screen are small. John Carter just never pulled me in

Project X

Friday, March 2nd, 2012

Like a short-sighted high schooler who thinks his entire life will change if he gets the girl, Project X is in dogged pursuit of a single goal: to film the wildest, most debauched party of all time. It succeeds at this by throwing pretty much everything at the wall, from a violent midget to a mounted policeman to a bevy of naked chicks, and by ignoring all the rules of storytelling
