Tomatometer Watch: The Hunger Games

March 17th, 2012

Questions on a Hunger Games fan’s mind since they announced they were doing a movie: Does Jennifer Lawrence, on one heck of a hot streak, capture the bottled emotion and intense physicality of Katniss Everdeen? Does director Gary Ross — known for engaging but decidedly undark films Pleasantville and Seabiscuit — render faithfully the dystopia and sci-fi decadence of Panem? Does Lionsgate have a blockbuster franchise on their hands? The odds are in our favor for this answer: YES.

Five Favorite Films with Genesis Rodriguez

March 17th, 2012

In the odd chance that you happened to be watching Mexican telenovelas sometime in the last five or six years, you may have locked eyes upon Genesis Rodriguez, a young actress who was a regular cast member on several shows before moving to Los Angeles for an arc on Entourage. You’re also likely to enjoy her performance as Will Ferrell’s absurdly radiant paramour in this week’s Casa de mi Padre , a movie that riffs heavily on the telenovelas of Rodriguez’s past. We sat down with Rodriguez for a chat last week, in which she reflected on working with Ferrell and his intentions behind playing a Mexican. Seeking Justice

March 16th, 2012

It?s difficult to find anything positive to say about Seeking Justice. The movie wastes no opportunity to show its audience how meandering and idiotic the story is, and given the familiar plot line you can?t even call it a waste of potential. Save your money for the next Nicolas Cage movie.

Critics Consensus: 21 Jump Street is Certified Fresh

March 16th, 2012

This week at the multiplex, remake fever strikes again in the form of 21 Jump Street. An adaptation of the hit late-1980s cop drama – which featured a certain young actor named Johnny Depp – “21 Jump Street” stars Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum as detectives who go back to school; what do the critics have to say? In theory, a revamp of 21 Jump Street doesn’t sound all that promising. In practice, critics say, it’s a delightful surprise, one that successfully satirizes its source material while plumbing the depths of its well-developed characters. In the film, Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum star as a pair of cops who go undercover as high school students to bust a drug ring.
